Regarding Alpha Cet and Beta Ari as comparison stars for Mira,
Alpha Cet has a B-V of 1.64 and Beta Ari has a B-V of 0.13. If
observers viewed these stars in focus and with direct vision, Alpha
Cet would appear 0.2-0.3 mags brighter than its V mag. Viewing
these stars out of focus and with averted vision should eliminate
this problem. Alpha Cet is a good comparison star for Mira since
its color is roughly the same as Mira's. Beta Cet (V=2.04, B-V=1.02)
is another good comparison star.
