[vsnet-campaign-v838mon 354] V838 Mon
Just to clarify things:
The light echo has remained about the same diameter for
the past month; it is about 34 arcsec in diameter.
As V838 Mon itself has faded, the echo is much easier
to detect at BVRI than before. Any telescope+CCD should
be able to get a decent image. The hard part is its small
diameter; you really want good seeing and fine pixelization,
similar to planetary imaging. There is considerable structure.
V838 Mon itself is fading 0.3-0.4mag/day; last night it
was V=13.1. The star is *very* red; I saturate in 3 seconds
at Ic, but have only 150DN peak at U in 10 minutes.
Enjoy! This should be a fun object visually for the
next couple of weeks.
