Not much in the way of a hypernova..unless it has a hick-up.

SN 1998bw reached a similar magnitude and it happened much farther
out...

But possibly we haven't seen the end of the SN 2002 ap fireworks yet.
Unfortunately it is evolving close to the horizon from our Southern
summertime perspective..
