[vsnet-campaign-sn 241] SN 2001ej in UGC 3829
Dear SN watchers,
A. Dimai discovered SN 2001ej in the course of the CROSS program.
The discovery magnitude is 16.5. If it is of SN Ia, it can reach mag
15.5.
The position of SN 2001ej is reported as R.A. = 7h23m43s.23, Decl.
= +33o26'38".0 (2000.0), which is about 4" west and 7" north of the
center of UGC 3829. Note that UGC 3829 is a colliding pair of
galaxies; the above offset should be measured from the brighter
component (face-on Sc galaxy). SN lies about 18" west and 14" south
of the dimmer galaxy (edge-on spiral).
Because the colliding galaxies is often the birth place of many
massive stars, they would produce the gravitational collapser. The
magnitude at discovery is consistent if it is of this sort, but
slightly brighter than the typical examples. Of course, it can be of
type Ia in rise or reddened. Further monitoring and spectroscopic
confirmation is needed.
