Dear SN watchers, IAUC 7704 informed the prediscovery magnitudes of SN 2001ed as follows: 2001 Aug. 21 V=14.7 Southern All-Sky SN Survey at Mt. Stromlo 2001 Aug. 22.13 14.5: P. Antonini, unfiltered CCD 2001 Aug. 29.13 15.0: P. Antonini, unfiltered CCD (2001 Sept. 2.96 14.9: CROSS, unfiltered CCD, discovery) From those photometry, SN 2001ed is probably not an SN Ia well before maximum phase. It can be a type II SN in its plateau phase, or other type SN some days (or a week) after maximum. In either case, it is quite overluminous if its distance is consistent with the recession velocity of the host galaxy. Further observations are strongly urged. Sincerely Yours, Hitoshi Yamaoka, Kyushu Univ., Japan yamaoka@rc.kyushu-u.ac.jp
