(fwd) CV Conference at Goettingen, 2nd announcement ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please distribute to all colleagues who might be interested ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2nd Announcement and Call for Papers (December 21, 2000) THE PHYSICS OF CATACLYSMIC VARIABLES AND RELATED OBJECTS 5-10 August 2001 Georg-August-Universit"at G"ottingen Germany http://www.uni-sw.gwdg.de/CVConference IMPORTANT DATES: Paper abstracts: March 01, 2001 Registration: May 01, 2001 Aim --- The conference "The Physics of Cataclysmic Variables and Related Objects" is the next in a long line of international and general CV conferences, the last of which were held in Keele/UK (1995) and Jackson Hole/Wyoming/USA (1997). As the title conveys, this meeting is supposed to focus on the physical processes underlying the observed phenomena. This is not to mean a predominance of theory and of theorists, but puts an emphasis on why we do this type of research and what we learn from the study of accreting stars in close binaries in the broader scope of astrophysical progress. Our intent is to encourage talks on exciting new theoretical and observational results which give astrophysical insights into the processes involved and to relegate the presentation of numerical techniques, data analysis, and phenomenological studies to the poster sessions. Venue ----- The conference will be hosted by the Georg-August-Universit"at G"ottingen and will be held in the ``Zentrales H"orsaal-Geb"aude'' on the central campus, 5 minutes walking distance to the old city with many shops, pubs, and restaurants. This modern complex has none of the charm of the old university buildings (e.g. the old Observatory) but has ample space for posters and large, well-equipped lecture halls. The opening talks will be held in the much more festive atmosphere of the University's classical Aula. Meeting format -------------- We have chosen the format of the meeting as a sequence of eight sessions with 4 talks each plus an extended discussion round per session. All talks will be of equal length (25 min + 5 min discussion). The sessions forseen are Physics of accretion discs I Physics of accretion discs II Physics of outflows Magnetic systems Binary evolution I Binary evolution II The Nova Connection Secondary and primary stars Besides the 32 talks in total, a substantial amount of time will be available for posters and discussion sessions with short oral contributions for which the SOC members act as convenors. This allows for some specialized, technical or phenomenological presentations to be made in addition to the talks. Initially, the following nine speakers (about one per session) have been invited to cover interesting new developements in the scientific areas: Isabelle Baraffe (Lyon, France) Steven Balbus (Charlottesville/Virginia, USA) Jean-Marie Hameury (Strasbourg, France) Andrew King (Leicester, UK) Norman Murray (Toronto, Canada) Saul Rappaport (Cambridge/Massachusetts, USA) G"unther R"udiger (Potsdam, Germany) Jim Truran (Chicago, USA) Dayal Wickramasinghe (Canberra, Australia) The remaining talks (up to 3 per session) will be selected based on the paper abstracts submitted no later than March 01, 2001. We will attempt to provide a balanced and reasonably complete coverage of the basic physical problems in the field - both theoretical and observational - by appropriately selecting the additional speakers. Registration, and proceedings ----------------------------- Registration for the conference has started now and can be done through a form on the web (please e-mail us if you have any problems with this system). The early registration fee available until May 01 is EUR 150,- (currently about 140 US$). For later registrations the fee will rise to EUR 180,-. The registration fee will cover the registration materials, coffee, tea and cookies during the meeting, the conference dinner, and the proceedings which will be published in the ASP Conference Series. The University administration is currently preparing to accept credit card payments of the registration fee. Details will be announced a.s.a.p. Paper submission ---------------- As noted above, only a very limited number of contributions will be selected by the SOC for oral presentation. Half-page abstracts for talks should be submitted until March 01, 2001 using the LaTeX abstract template which can be downloaded from http://www.uni-sw.gwdg.de/CVConference/abstract.tex . The number of poster presentations is practically unlimited. Poster abstracts should be submitted no later than July 01, 2001 in order to be included in the conference abstract booklet. Travel support -------------- We are currently investigating possible funding sources to help with attendance at the meeting. It is clear, however, that support will be very limited. Presently, we are confident only that we can provide some support to participants from East European Countries. Hotels ------ We have reserved blocks of rooms in a few G"ottingen hotels located in the old city or within walking distance to it. You will need to book through the local tourist office - a painless process which can be done over the internet. Please, download the hotel reservation form from the conference Web-page ( http://www.uni-sw.gwdg.de/CVConference/hotels.html ) and submit the completed form by e-mail, Fax, or mail to Tourist-Information, Altes Rathaus, Markt 9, D-37073 G"ottingen Fax: +49 551 49980 10 e-mail: tourismus@goettingen.de The hotel room contingent for the conference will be kept until 13 July 2001. Social events ------------- There will be a registration desk on the evening of Sunday August 5th at a local restaurant with a chance to visit over dinner (at your own expence). On the evening of Tuesday, August 7th, a special concert of music composed by Sir William Herschel will be performed by a local orchestra for the conference participants in the classical Aula of the University (tickets are free for conference participants, costs covered by local sponsors). A half day excursion to visit the beautiful medieval town of Hamelin (famous for the fairytale of the Pied Piper) and to see the Renaissance architecture along the River Weser is planned for Wednesday, August 8th afternoon and evening (about EUR 40,- per person). A conference dinner with a buffet and local beverages will be held on the grounds of the historical Universit"ats-Sternwarte on Thursday, August 9th (free for conference participants, EUR 25,- for accompanying persons). On the weekends before and after the conference, we will offer organized tours to the Harz mountains and to the German capital, Berlin. To help us gauge the interest and numbers, please indicate when you register whether you would be interested in such activities. The costs will depend somewhat on the number of participants and will be announced later (when firm bookings of the excursions will be requested). G"ottingen can be reached most easily by air via Hannover (HAJ) or Frankfurt (FRA), and by fast train (ICE) within a few hours from almost everywhere in Germany. Most famous for its University and a long and illustrious line of physicists, mathematicians and chemists - Born, Clebsch, Courant, Debye, Dehmelt, Dirichlet, Eigen, Franck, Gauss, Glaser, Goeppert-Mayer, Hahn, Heisenberg, Hilbert, Klein, Landau, Minkowski, Neher, Nernst, Paul, Planck, Prantl, Riemann, Runge, Schwarzschild, von Laue, von Neumann, Wallach, Weber, W"ohler, and many others - G"ottingen is also the home of four Max-Planck-Institutes (five including the MPI f"ur Aeronomie in neighboring Lindau), and the Deutsches Zentrum f"ur Luft und Raumfahrt. With a population of only 130,000, of which about 23,000 are students, G"ottingen is a pleasant University town with a large number of unassuming but very old half-timbered houses (from 13th century on), a medieval city hall (14th century), and the park-like remains of the former city fortifications. The Observatory is still housed in the classical observatory building finished in 1816 for the then newly-appointed Gauss. Organizers ---------- Scientific Organizing Committee (SOC): Klaus Beuermann (G"ottingen, Germany, Chair), Anne Cowley (Tempe/Arizona, USA), Ulrich Kolb (Open University, UK), Jean-Pierre Lasota (Paris, France), Tom Marsh (Southampton, UK), Domitilla de Martino (Napoli, Italy), Mike Shara (Am.Nat.Hist.Mus., USA), Brian Warner (Cape Town, South Africa) Local Organizing Committee (LOC): Boris G"ansicke, Wolfgang Glatzel, Frederic Hessman, Klaus Reinsch (Chair).
