While observing meteors on the morning of Saturday 22 May, at 3.10am local time (May 21, 17.10 UTC), Martin Rudd of the Astronomical Society of Frankston took a photo of the southern Milky Way that shows a bright image of Nova Velorum 1999, some 16 hours before the visual discovery by Peter Williams and Alan Gilmore (IAUC 7176). Using the stars phi Vel and pi Cen I estimate the magnitude of the nova as 3.6p. The photo was a 5 minute exposure with a 28mm lens on Kodak Gold Flexiclear 400 film. Details are as follows: V382 Vel May 21.715UTC 3.6p Martin Rudd, Mt Martha, Victoria, Australia Regards, Bruce Sumner
