G'day all,
Although it's been raining almost all evening here, I did get a _quick_
eyeball of Nova Vel. The only useable comparison at the time was
Mu Vel (mag 2.7v):

These go from mag 0.8 down to 10.2. If it gets too bright,
there's also Alpha and Beta Cen (mags 0.0 and 0.6 respectively).
