In CVC 75 (vsnet-obs 1766), T. Vanmunster reports on his detection of
an outburst of V701 Tau, probably first ever since discovery. Available
observations (taken from CVC 75):
1995 Dec 24.951 UT, [14.6: (T. Vanmunster, 0.35-m refl., seq: GSC);
Dec 25.847 UT, 14.5 (T. Vanmunster);
Dec 25.866 UT, 14.5 (G. Poyner, 0.40-m refl., seq: GSC);
Dec 25.951 UT, 14.4 (T. Vanmunster);
Dec 25.983 UT, 14.1 (E. Broens, 0.35-m refl., seq: GSC);
The Ouda team has just confirmed this outburst using a 60-cm telescope +
CCD, giving a rough magnitude estimate of V~14.3. Observers should note
that the object is slightly mis-identified on the atlas by Downes & Shara
(1993). The true object is located ~30 arcsec ESE to the position given
in their catalog -- making a regular triangle with nearby GSC 14.3 & 14.8
stars. This identification has been confirmed by checking the discovery
report by Esastova, L.K. 1973, Astron. Tsirk. 774, which also gives the
following magnitude estimates for the 1970 outburst:
UT mpg
h m
1970 Sep 2 22 08.7 15.0
23 17.3 15.00
8 21 33.0 15.69
22 34.3 15.88
23 35.3 15.58
9 00 36.0 15.48
11 23 50.0 16.24
12 00 53.5 15.97
26 19 57.5 <16.5
21 05.0 <16.5
We hope we can provide an outburst image (and accurate astrometry) next
morning. For observers' convenience, we have put a preoutburst image
taken on Nov. 21, on which a rough position of the object is marked.
