Hola everyone -

First, my congratulations to Minoru Yamamoto and Nicolas Brown on their
discovery. Well done!

The nova appears at the edge of several of my films (Kodak Tech Pan +
orange filter and an 85mm lens). My magnitudes and times are as follows:

 object YYYYMMDD(UT) mag remarks
SGRV4745 20030419.1790 7.8R LIL Through thin clouds
SGRV4745 20030419.1802 7.8R LIL Through thin clouds
SGRV4745 20030423.1967 8.3R LIL Bright background; moon nearby
SGRV4745 20030423.2021 8.3R LIL Bright backgroung; moon nearby
SGRV4745 20030427.2054 8.1R LIL
SGRV4745 20030427.2076 8.3R LIL

Last night I observed the nova with a CCD and a 20cm f/1.5 Schmidt camera:

SGRV4745 20030428.1949 9.47V LIL Through thin clouds; +/- 0.04 mag
SGRV4745 20030428.1974 9.39B LIL Through thin clouds; +/- 0.04 mag

You may ask how I could have missed an 8th magnitude nova. I was away from
home for 3 weeks before mid-April, and on the first four exposures listed
above, the star was only faintly visible because of poor sky. I noted it
on the Apr. 27 films, but since it had been on the earlier films and little
changed, I assumed it was a known variable -- and for some reason, the
image appeared "soft", typical of a red Mira.

All the best to all, Bill Liller
