     The rate of a magnitude per week isn't unusual, and is the reason
why several Miras have been mistaken for ordinary novae erupting.
V418 Cas is one such, and even appears in early dwarf novae catalogues
(and in the Downes et al catalogue as a reject object).  See also in the
