Re: [vsnet-chat 6493] Re: 93 comp star for RS Oph Follow-up message from Prof. Starrfield: Date: Sat, 31 May 2003 21:57:26 -0700 (MST) From: Sumner Starrfield <sumner.starrfield@asu.edu> Subject: Re: [vsnet-campaign-nova 1271] Re: [vsnet-chat 6493] Re: 93 comp star for RS Oph Dear Dr. Kato Thanks for finding that typo - I read it off my CV. I am also surprised to find that WZ Sge reference in that paper since we knew from the IUE observations in 1978 that it was a long period dwarf nova not a RN. Unfortunately, that paper by Webbink et al. confused the issue for some time. It took some time to analyze the IUE observations of RS Oph in outburst and realize that they were telling us that it had to be a TNR also. However the explosion was occurring INSIDE the atmosphere of the red giant. The environment is very important for RN. The IUE analysis appears in Shore et al. ApJ, 456, 717, 1996 (I am still reading my CV so I hope this reference is ok). We really had to work hard on understanding the physical development which is why it took so many years after the outburst. I have alerted my colleagues about the possible outburst of RS Oph. That would be very exciting and hopefully we could get CHANDRA DDT time to look at it (I have expended my ToO time on V4743 Sgr). best Sumner Starrfield
