I have checked again these two references (the latter is ApJ 325 rather
than 326). These two articles basically modelled U Sco (particularly its
1979 outburst), and potentially U Sco-type recurrent novae, but there
does not seem to be an explicit mentioning about "symbiotic" recurrent
novae, which is in question now. I understand that the implications from
these references were correctly addressed in Webbink (1987), which
was the basis of the AAVSO VSOTM interpretation [original matter of
discussion in this thread]. I understand that the TNR nature of symbiotic
recurrent novae was not yet understood (at least not well documented)
at the time of Webbink's writing.

By the way, variable star obsevers would be interested to read in
the first paper (ApJ, 291, 136) that there was a phrase like:
other "recurrent" novae such as WZ Sge... This explains the history
of CV understanding.
