Re: [vsnet-gcvs 450] Nomenclature of variable stars > Speaking of nomenclature rules ..... > Why didn't omicron 1 and 2 Cygni retain their Bayer-letter names and = > were named V695 and V1488 Cygni???? I bet these object were given designations before the current scheme of nomenclature was established. According to GCVS3, there is no remark on V695 Cyg = omicron1 Cyg. It was possible that the GCVS compiler did not notice the presence of the Beyer name at the time of this nomenclature. In the same volume of GCVS3, omicron2 Cyg was given no V- number but listed as omicron2 Cyg. The inconsistency was already present at this moment. Perhaps the GCVS compiler noticed this inconsistency later, and gave a (seemlingly consistent) solution to assign a V number to the latter object. I don't presume that there will be more similar cases in future. Regards, Taichi Kato
