   They are probably a descendant from century-old, paradigms sought
by the variable star researchers at that epoch.  There were (at least)
two competing efforts to designate variable stars, namely the Harvard
designation and the German method.  After some resolution(?) at the
IAU, the latter was adopted as the official final designation of
variable stars, as we see now.  [I hope someone could more enlighten
us about the history of variable star designations].
