   First classify catalogs by their categories.  There are general purpose
catalogs and other specific catalogs.  If you are speaking of some objects
in the context of variable stars, the use of "variable star designations"
(GCVS, NSV) is more preferred than that of general catalogs.  Otherwise,
you might better refer to general catalogs (HD, BD - Durchmusterung, GSC
and others); it would be probably preferred to call a star's name with
a Durchmusterung number rather than the NSV number when you are speaking
of a steller occultation.
