I understand that these observations apparently came from misidentification
with a brighter star (similar confusion has been reported for other objects).
But what looks to me surprising was that these estimates closely followed
a fading tendency of the real V Gem, which was several magnitudes fainter.

From this finding, there is apparently a neccessity for explanation
in addition to simple misidentification. My hypothesis is that the observer
knew that V Gem is on its fading branch, and this knowledge somehow affected
the estimates even if the actually observed object is different from V Gem.
