But is it rising or falling - can anyone comment? What's the state of any other bright Miras? Hi, Stan: We are lucky to have this very bright star in one of its brightest maxima right now! It is rising around 4.5 but it's more than a month before its predicted maximum, so it will probably be one of its brightest performances (its brigthest recorded maximum is 3.9 according to the GCVS). The last 4 or 5 days the rising trend has slowed down so we have to watch before speaking. S Carinae is in a very interesting maximum around 6.2, since it showed a hump in the ascending branch a couple of weeks ago. R Hydrae is also rising and although it's been around ten days I don't observe it, I can tell it is around 6.5-7.0 magnitude. R Centauri is past minimum (at 8.2) and have started its way to secondary maximum (now 8.0). BH Crucis is also rising. After a secondary maximum at 7.3 and a drop to 7.4 is now rising faster and getting to 7.0. A very good moment to observe this very red mira star. As R Cen its period is changing. It lenghtend from 419 days (1973) to 550 days (now) I am uploading my more recent lightcurves for bright miras right now, so take a look! http://ar.geocities.com/varsao/Curva_R_Car.htm http://ar.geocities.com/varsao/Curva_S_Car.htm http://ar.geocities.com/varsao/Curva_R_Hya.htm http://ar.geocities.com/varsao/Curva_R_Cen.htm http://ar.geocities.com/varsao/curva_BH_Cru.htm There are also updated lightcurves for eta Carinae (slowly brightening) and theta Apodis (beautiful!). http://ar.geocities.com/varsao/Curva_Eta_Carinae.htm http://ar.geocities.com/varsao/Curva_The_Aps.htm Regards, Sebastian.
