Checking through my records, using the BAAVSS chart for SS Aur I have never seen it fainter than 15.6. I also hardly ever have trouble seeing it a minimum (except for nights with bright Moon), with it usually being seen between 15.0 & 15.5 - occasionally brighter. I edit the VS pages for 'The Astronomer' magazine, and the minimum magnitude reported by observers for SS Aur is in the 15's. Regardless of the sequence used, if it was at 16.7 visual, I wouldn't see it at all!
