There have been a lot of discussions regarding the connection between
GRBs and supernovae (I hope some specialist will have an explanation here).
At least one of GRB afterglows has been claimed to show the late signature
of the associated supernova light. It is not unlikely some of nearby
(well-observed) supernovae may have faint gamma-ray events -- faint because
the supernova jet is misalligned to us (some possible associations have
been proposed). The topic we have been discussing is therefore not
late-stage or misalligned supernovae, but the short-lived burst or afterglow
itself.
