I reproduce here the note for EV Aqr given by Downes, Webbink and Shara, in
their
Catalog and Atlas of Cataclysmic Variables - 2nd edition (PASP 109, 1997
April, p392):
EV Aqr - object is not visible on Guide Star Survey J plate (1983.451);
position marked is that indicated by Khruzina and Shugarov (1991), but
differs from the bright star to the NW (GSC 0526-01562) marked by Tsesevich
and Kazanasmas (1971), whom they cite as their nominal reference.>>
I have all three publications, and have taken the opportunity to compare them.
The oldest atlas (Tsesevich and Kazanasmas, 1971 (TK)) shows EV Aqr under
its earlier
provisional name, CSV 5342. The chart is small and contains some rather
fine detail,
which could be a source of error. The chart marks GSC 0526-01562 quite
definitely,
as I checked it against a GSC/USNO-A2.0 chart. This is how my published
position in
IBVS 4037 was derived. This star is Arne's red star.
As mentioned above, the TK chart is small and rather finely detailed around
the variable
and I consider that there is a definite chance of error if sufficient care
is not
taken in copying the chart. I believe that this could have happened when
Khruzina and
Shugarov prepared their own chart, using the TK chart as a reference.
When I noticed this "revised" id., I included a note at the end of IBVS
4238, to this
effect.
It would be helpful if someone with access to old Russian publications
(pre-1971) may be
able to retrieve some info. on EV Aqr, and what observations are extant, to
justify its
classification as a cataclysmic variable. Until then, I would be inclined to
put more
trust in the TK identification : -
EV Aqr = GSC 0526.1562 = A. Henden red star.
Regards,
/Mati
