Hello,
Here comes another contribution to the chat about unidentified objects.
On 3. January 1997 at app. 2250 UTC I have the following note in my
observation logg, translated into English:
"During observation of The Quadratides I become aware of a star in the
position RA 15h44m Dekl +40d (1950.0). It raised to 1m in brightness for in
the course of 1 minute decline to invisibility. There were no noticable
movement."
As a regular observing amateur for over 40 years, I beleave the sighting
was real enough. The limiting magnitude in that direction was 5.1m (44
UMa). This was just before the Iridium era. I beleave the first launch was
on 20. January the same year (97020A-F, no. 4-8). After having observed
over 100 glints the movement of the satellite is quite obvious. There are a
few satellites in very excentric orbits but with no noticable movement the
distance would have to be too large to glint to 1m or more.
I have actually no idea of what I saw. There have been reported visually
conterpart to GRS, hasn't it?
With kind regards,
