It is not clear what kind of variable it is. It's mean magnitude seems to
be around 15 or so with occasional outbursts up to ~13 mag (Goranskij
1990, IBVS 3464). It's spectrum in quiescence does not show cataclysmic
variable-like features, i.e. it is typical for a late-type spectrum
(Downes et al. 1995, AJ 110, 1824). A (flaring) X-ray transient has been
detected by SAX (designated SAX J1819.3-2525), with a position coincident
with that of GM Sgr (In 't Zand et al. 1999, IAU Circ 7119). It seems to
be on and variable for about 2 months or so.
