Hi all,
Here are a few more thoughts on the position of V17 and its
companion.
Using the DSS image of NGC5128 it is just possible to isolate
CoD-42 8389 (the "companion") from the greatly overexposed image
of the galaxy. Considerable contrast and image adjustement is
required, but a possible image of the star is measureable. V17 itself
is not visible on this DSS image (exposed 24 March 1991).
By using Mati Morel's offsets [vsnet-chat 753] of V17 from
CoD-42 8389 (+3.6s, -20"), an approximate position of V17 is able
to be obtained. The results of all this are, for Epoch 2000:
CoD-42 8389 13h 25m 28.08s -43d 02' 22.3" (DSS)
V17 13h 25m 31.7s -43d 02' 02" (Mati Morel offsets)
However the Bryant/Thompson chart gives a RA separation of only
about 2s, which yields the following position for V17, again Epoch
2000
V17 13h 25m 30s -43d 02' 02"
I hope this discussion does not complicate an already confusing
issue.
