[vsnet-chat 724] Re: on charts and sequences

G'day all,

Which observers? I am surprised to read this. The VSS RASNZ newsletter
often carries notices of new charts and/or lists of new comp star
magnitudes. Usually with a strong suggestion from Frank to _use_ the
new versions!

I too wonder why the AAVSO doesn't at least have a list of its charts
online. My index to all official VSS RASNZ charts (plus a few of our
own local charts) is available on the Web at:

http://vsnet.assa.org.au/vstars/vsgindex.zip

This index now includes all official charts issued to the end of 1997
November, ordered by star name. For each of the ~1200 stars, the HD
number, current VSS RASNZ chart numbers, classification, maximum,
minimum, and period (if any) are given. A mere 28kB to download.

I originally compiled this index as an aid to selecting targets; so it
includes a preface of advice to beginners. However there is also a list
of superseded VSS RASNZ charts and a list (incomplete!) of alternative
names for some variables. These will be of use to those observers who
wonder if a final version of a preliminary chart is available.

One caveat: some of the variables in the index are shown on charts
intended for another variable, so appropriate comp stars may be
undefined.

The VSS RASNZ charts themselves are not on the Web for a few reasons,
most notably (1) lack of affordable server space, and (2) copyright
problems. Maybe the AAVSO have the same difficulties??
