[vsnet-chat 582] V651 Mon (summary of fading episode)

V651 Mon (summary of fading episode)

  * The center of the fading was around 1997 February. The central star
    was barely visibile.

  * After removing the 16-day (orbital) variation, the midpoints of the
ingress and egress become 1996 November and 1997 May, respectively.
Thus it took about 6 months for the cloud core to pass in front of
    the binary.

  * Superimposed on this long-term obscuration episode, 16-day orbital
variation was observed as in the previous (1980's) fading.

  * Notable was the brightness spike observed at the beginning of 1997
April, probably indicating the cloud was partially transparent here.
About 6+ month preceding this brightness spike, similar but _fading_
spike was observed in late 1996 September. It seems to be that the
obscuring cloud is not symmetrical, and that there may have been a
condensation in the moving (orbiting) direction of the cloud, and
a transparent patch behind the cloud core. Was the 6-month interval
a mere coincidence, or some sort of natural consequence?

  * In 1980's, such fading episodes were said to be observed only once in
century, but the present "second" occurrence of such phenomenon may
indicate such episodes may occur more frequently. This star should
be monitored every clear night as many observers are doing for R CrB
    stars.

  * In a session of the IAU Meeting, the MACHO collaboration team reported
the discovery of a young Magellanic PNN which showed showed sporadic
fading episodes (I don't remember the name or other information).
This case may be a second example of PNNs showing temporary and changing
    obscuration by the surrounding clouds.

Suggestions and comments are highly appreciated.

Regards,
Taichi Kato
