G'day all,

I speculate that RU Cen may be a star that used to be observed a lot by
a few people, who have now "retired" (or died). This star is shown on
the VSS RASNZ chart for MU Cen (the UG, not Mu Cen the bright GCAS)
along with many suitable comparison stars. However the chart draws no
particular attention to RU Cen, so I guess many observers simply check
MU Cen and move on to their next target?
I too am surprised at its apparent neglect nowadays; and I would be
pleased if someone could prove me wrong about this.
SX Cen has an unfriendly sequence. There are some big "steps" between
comparison stars and SX seems to linger in these most of the time. Not
one of my favourite targets.
The VSS RASNZ charts for AI Sco, AR Pup and AR Sgr show lettered
comparison stars. This does discourage some observers, who may be
unaware that magnitudes have since been determined for these sequences.
AR Sgr suffers the further disadvantage of being in an undistinguished
but very crowded starfield. Which makes it harder for those of us who
lack setting circles, computer guiders, etc...!
cheers,
Fraser Farrell
