[vsnet-chat 232] Re: Q:rule of nomenclature of new variables

Dr. Skiff , thank you for your reply to my question about criteria of discovery
of new variable stars.

Yes, I also think that it is important to determine type of variable and publish
with light curve and finder chart.

Comet and asteroid hunters understand how their discovery of comet or asteroid
is assign as new object. Asteroids hunters have follow up observations to
determine orbit of their new asteroids because it is need to get tentative
number of asteroid as 1997A1. They may allow to suggest name of their asteroid
when it is cataloged as new asteroid.

And nova hunters know how they notice their discovery to astronomical community
by IAUC or Vsnet alert.

As Vs-neters know, there are many good works about discovery of new variable
stars by amateurs, L.Dahlmark, M.Collins and D.H. Kaiser etc.

However, many nova hunters is not familiar with discovery of new variable stars,
I think. And it is important to advice them about discovery of new variables.
Their discovery must be listed in catalog of variable stars with reference of
thier discovery report.

In Japan, many nova hunter, M. Wakuda, M. Yamamoto, S. Sakurai, Y. Kanatsu, K.
Takamizawa, K. Minoda (...sorry, I can not list up all of name) also notice new
variable stars during their sky patrol.
Some of them appeared as (tentatively) nova-like object in IAUC as Sugano's
object, Honda-Kuwano's object etc. And many other variables are expect to follow
up observations.

And I don't (and nova hunters might not) know detail of criteria of "discovery"
of new variable stars.
Recently we have our publication in English, VSOLJ variable star bulletin.
Thus we can report their discover after some follow up observations.
Is it enough? Or is it better to publish in IBVS or other publications that are
well circulated ?

Discovery of new variable stars usually might not impact to Astronomy.
However it is good work for amateurs who wish to do science, I think.
Some astronomers might think that it is important to discover some peculiar
variables but might not pay attention to its amateur discover.
But amateurs don't, I think. All of amateurs nova hunters are in competition
(and ,of course, in cooperation.)

If other neters know criteria to list variable stars in the name list of
variable stars issued by GCVS editors, please post.
