Photometric sequences around N4526
This is a reminder to visible-light observers that the preferred set
of local reference stars is that of Kilkenny & Malcolm 1984 MNRAS 209, 169.
They provide UBVRI data for several stars in the field measured from South
Africa using Cousins E-region standards. They find a significant difference
between their results and UBV values by Hanes et al. 1976 (MNRAS 177, 653).
The differences are such that the Hanes V magnitudes are too faint by about
0.04, while B-V and U-B exhibit a lot of scatter.
Visual observers using the Thompson & Bryan chart for the field are
reminded that the sequence is that of Hanes et al. The Kilkenny & Malcolm
V magnitudes are as follows:
T&B V (K&M)
68 6.737
113 11.277
120 11.98
126 12.54 (immediately N of galaxy)
126 12.574 (SE of galaxy)
134 13.31
146 14.61
Thus only the star near the galaxy needs adjustment. In addition, the bright
unmarked star WSW of the galaxy is HD 109285, for which the SIMBAD database
lists V = 6.91 and B-V = 1.04; the HD spectral type is K0, and the colors
imply that it is an ordinary K-giant.
