During my literature search, I have noted a neglected, possible UV-bright variable star (cataclysmic?) in Lanning's galactic plane survey (PASP 85, 70). The object Lanning 17 is located at
18h 23m 00s.39 (J2000.0)
-04o 37' 09".6
Lanning's paper shows the object around mag 15 or something accompanied by a hint of nebulosity (?), while the POSS shows only a ~20 mag star.
Wouldn't it worth monitoring?
Regards,
Taichi Kato
Taichi Kato commented on the variable object Lanning 17 from my first paper devoted to the Sandage Two-Color Survey of the Galactic Plane. I should note that sporadic attempts to check the field for any evidence of the object have been made from time to time by colleagues without success. I agree that a more systematic monitoring to recover the nova-like? object would be very useful. It would also be very interesting to obtain a deep CCD image of the field in search of a possible remnant.
I would also like to note that, while the analysis of the Sandage survey was in limbo and receiving little attention during the period 1973-1993, I and my colleague Michael Meakes have resumed the scanning of plates producing two additional catlogues, with several more in the queue. Up to date information on the survey (which includes several more potential white dwarfs and/or variable stars) may be found on the WWW site devoted to the survey, cf.

Contained on that site are updated J2000 coordinates as well as a comprehensive list, finding charts, and most published works. [Not all finding charts have yet been placed on the site, but are in preparation.]
