Radio-selected CVs
H. Bond reported: During the FIRST ("Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty
Centimeters") 1.4 GHz radio survey, using the Very Large Array, the radio
source FIRST J102347.6+003841 has been identified with a previously unknown
17th-mag Galactic cataclysmic variable (CV). Spectroscopic observations
suggest that the CV is a DQ Her- or AM Her-type magnetic CV, as are the
handful of other CVs that are known to be radio sources. CCD photometry
obtained at Kitt Peak shows rapid flickering and slower variations with
a peak-to-peak amplitude of at least 1 mag, but has not as yet revealed
the orbital period (vsnet-campaign-polar
8).
