SN 1997ei in NGC 3963

(vsnet-alert 1391)

Dear vsnet-observers,

IAUC 6795 reports the discovery of SN 1997ei in NGC 3963, which is the 9th discovery by Japanese Amateur SN hunter M. Aoki.

SN was discovered on Dec. 23, when it was about 16.5 mag (unfiltered CCD). Previous images which has been taken by him shows no object at SN location (nor on DDS image), but a possible faint object is present on Dec. 5 image.

The location of SN was reported as:
R.A. = 11h54m59s.98
Dec. = +58o29'26".4 (equinox 2000.0)
which is 10" west and 10" south of the center of the host galaxy.
The spectroscopic observation of this SN has not been reported on this IAUC, so the classification has not done yet. The earlier spectroscopy and magnitude monitoring are urged.

Best wishes,
Hitoshi Yamaoka, Kyushu Univ., Japan
