Subject: Possible Nova in Crux
According to IAUC 8184, V. Tabur disvcovered a possible nova of mag 10.2 (CCD) at R.A. = 12h23m16s.2, Decl. = -60o22'34" (J2000.0, uncertainty 4") on Aug. 20.486. On Aug. 21.5, Tabor reported that it had brightened about 1 mag. Berto Monard had confirmed the brightening, 9.2C on Aug. 21.71.

Dear all,
I have prepared a chart for the new nova (with ASAS-3 data) available at: http://ar.geocities.com/varsao/Carta_DZ_Cru.htm
Note that ST Crucis position is slightly off in the GCVS. ST Cru is CPD-59 4219 at 12h25m45.74s -600'00.2" (2000.0) (UCAC-1) This mira has a very large amplitude. Only a couple of cycles recorded by ASAS-3 show it varying between 8.1 and 14.4 (V). The GCVS period of 440 might be right. Some more years of continuous observations are needed.
Regards, Sebastian.(vsnet-alert 7829)
Subject: Peculiar Variable in Crux = Possible Nova in Crux
IAUC 8185 informed two spectroscopy of "possible nova in crux" (IAUC 8184, vsnet-alert 7827). The Cerro Tololo spectrum shows weak H_beta emission with P-Cyg profile, from which the reporter H. E. Bond suggest that it would be a classical nova before the maximum. The other reporter M. Della Valle et al., however, commented a lack of the typical signatures of classical novae. They suggest that it would be a flare up of post-AGB star, like V4332 Sgr, or V838 Mon. Further photometries, spectroscopies are defenitely urged.

Date: Sat, 23 Aug 2003 12:16:12 -0400 From: "W.Liller"Hola all -Subject: Tabur's star
I have these observations* of Tabur's star to report:
Aug 22.0085 = 'JD 2873.5085 V = 9.91 +/- 0.02 Aug 22.0087 = 'JD 2873.5087 B = 11.16 +/- 0.05 Aug 22.996 = 'JD 2874.496 R = 9.3 +/- 0.1 based on two red photographs.Thus, B-V = 1.25 which supports Della Valle's conclusion that Tabur's star is a post-asymptotic-giant-branch star in flare-up -- or something similar.
No emission lines could be detected on a weakly exposed objective prism spectrum taken in the red on August 22.0181.
All the best, Bill Liller
