[vsolj-alert 351] SS Cyg campaign

SS Cyg campaign

Subject: SS Cyg campaign

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

SS Cyg [RA(2000) = 21 42 42.30, Dec(2000) = +43 35 08.0] is at V~10 and is
slowly rising to an outburst which is predicted to peak on about June 9,
start back down almost immediately, and reach quiescence on about June 20.
The Hubble Space Telescope (HST), Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE), and
Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE; PI = Eric Schlegel) will observe the
source between about June 7 and June 21. The details of the satellite obser-
vations are listed below:

1) HST observations (1st two visits pinned down, 2nd two less certain):

   4-orbit visit runs June 8, 17:48-23:07 UT
   4-orbit visit runs June 10, 18:10-23:43 UT
   4-orbit visit starts June 14, 14UT
   4-orbit visit starts June 18, 13UT

2) EUVE runs "continuously" from June 7 08:05 UT through June 20 14:00 UT.

3) RXTE plan is complicated and not yet scheduled, but the sequence starts on
June 7 and ends of June 21. There will be coverage during the HST observa-
tions and in between, but the details are not yet known.

In addition to these satellite observations, I have contacted a number of
ground-based optical observers who may be able to obtain high-speed (~1 sec)
multicolor photometry, but the number of observers who can obtain this type of
data may be small because large telescopes (~1 meter) are required to gather
enough light to see the low-amplitude quasi-periodic oscillations. I am
interested in involving additional optical observers in this campaign who can
obtain optical photometry (UBVRI) and/or spectroscopy, since HST will only
cover the bandpass from 1150-2780 Angstroms. "Amateur" observers should submit
their visual magnitude estimates to either VSNET or AAVSO; the AAVSO already
has issued a News Flash (#446) and is centrally involved in this campaign.

Regards,
Chris Mauche
