Date: Tue, 26 Aug 2003 17:26:21 -0700 (PDT) From: "Christopher W. Mauche" <mauche@cygnus.llnl.gov> Subject: Call for observations: QS Tel Dear VSNET Observers: I would like to request that any and all equatorial to southern hemisphere CCD observers to monitor the magnetic cataclysmic variable QS Tel (2000 coordinates: RA: 19:38:35.6, DEC: -46:12:57) beginning now and continuing until at least the end of 2004. There is currently only a very small amount of VSNET data for this star, (see: http://vsnet.kusastro.kyoto-u.ac.jp/vsnet/LCs/index/TELQS.html ), contributed by a single observer beginning in 2001, and it is insufficient for me to understand its optical light curve, which reportedly ranges from V~17.4 to V~15.2. I need to know when the source is in a high optical state so that I can trigger approved target-of-opportunity observations of the star with the Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating spectrometer. Regular observations (once per night per observer) beginning now are required to establish the optical light curve of the source so that the Chandra observations can be triggered with confidence and a good-quality EUV/soft X-ray spectrum can be obtained. The VSNET finding chart can be found here: http://vsnet.kusastro.kyoto-u.ac.jp/pub/vsnet/charts/Tycho2/telqs.gif Thank you in advance for your valued contributions to this effort. Without your help, the Chandra observations will not be triggered! Regards, Chris Mauche ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Christopher W.
