[vsnet-obs 3593] Nova? Crucis 1996

G'day all,

My first observation of Liller's latest discovery (IAU Circular
6463) earlier this evening:

1996 Aug 30 10:49 UT 11.0v

Comparison star mags from provisional sequence by Mati Morel
(morel@ozemail.com.au), and VSS RASNZ Chart 955 (BI & BP Cru).
Near-full Moon and cirrus cloud made for poor seeing. At least
the starfield is easy to locate!

The large variations reported so far suggest they might be real, and
not just a "moonlight problem". Unfortunately, at this time of
year Crux tends to go behind trees/hills/buildings, which makes
long observing runs a bit difficult....

cheers,
