[vsnet-obs 482] V1057 Cygni brightness decline

The recent rather abrupt decline in the brightness of the FU Ori-type star
V1057 Cygni appears to be a singular event in the history of this object,
at least in the quarter century since its 6-magnitude outburst in 1969.
Data from the AAVSO CIRCULAR indicates an essentially steady decline from
9.9 to 11.7 in the visual took place between 1972 and 1982. After 1984 the
fading dwindled to about 0.02 magnitudes per year, the star being near
magnitude 12.1 for the past several years.

The current fading seems to be first evident in the March observations of
Mr. L.T.Jensen (AAVSO/VSNET), the undersigned having noted V1057 Cygni at
its "normal" brightness of 12.1 as late as 1995 February 3.0 UT. Mr. L.
Szentasko (VSNET) is the first to call any attention to the decline, on
April 22nd, when the star was 13.0 magnitude, with Mr. T.Vanmunster (VSNET)
reporting 12.8 on the 23rd. I recorded the star at 13.0 this morning
(April 26.48UT). It is quite possible that it is still fading.

The rather sudden brightness change is not typical of most FU Ori-type
stars and this event may perhaps signal some distinct alteration in the
character of V1057 Cygni.
