Back in the late 1980s Robert McNaught carried out a photographic patrol using an 85mm telephoto lens, from Siding Spring Observatory. Aside from nova discoveries, he detected a number of new variables. Some have never been published anywhere. Anyway, Rob sent me his discovery notes and identification sketches for about a dozen such stars. I have run Rob's list past the list of 50 new stars found by Vello Tabur. There is only one star common to both lists, which is TbrV0031. Rob's field notes leave no doubt, and I reproduce them here. TbrV0031. RH McN notes : 1986 Dec. 23/24 mag = 11 (approx) 1987 Dec. 24/25 mag = 10 (approx) <The star has a companion of about 12mag to the NE, dist. about 6". Star was confirmed var. on ESO R6377 -bright, and UKST R3994. Looks fainter on ESO B1346 than UKST J2194.> My own checking confirms that TbrV0031 = CPD-51 4492 = CoD-51 6072. (Note that CPD and CoD declinations are off by 12" and18" respectively.) Examination of DSS red images confirm 12 mag companion to the NE. CoD-51 6073 is a puzzling entry. According to the CoD it follows 6072 by only 0.4s, but is unlikely to refer to the 12mag companion, which is too close and faint to be measurable separately for the CoD. Most likely it is a duplicate observation of -51 6072. Regards, Mati Morel morel@ozemail.com..au
