I note with interest IBVS 5134, available via http://vsnet.konkoly.hu/cgi-bin/IBVS?5134 . This IBVS to a great extent confirms what has been opined before on the pages of vsnet [specifically vsnet-survey], that the ROTSE and other groups have been not entirely enthusiastic with respect to ascertaining whether or not their "new" variables are truly new or already included within the GCVS, never mind the NSV and/or its supplement. It is a testament to current amateur discoverers of new variables that they put quite a bit of effort into ensuring the proper identification of many if not all of their suspected variables in appropriate catalogues. Indeed, Taichi Kato has for quite some time been somewhat instrumental in providing a helpful service in this regard for people who announce their discoveries via vsnet-newvar. I commend this practice, and feel that to some extent amateurs are putting some better resourced professional groups to shame with respect to this issue. I do not know as to whether or not the author of IBVS 5134 is a professional or not, but I would not be surprised if he received no financial grant towards this exercise, unlike the ROTSE team, and yet achieved more impressive results.
