The list below shows (some) improved coordinates and "new" IRAS IDs
(not linked in SIMBAD) for about 125 mostly faint red variables classified by
Stephenson in 1992IBVS.3800....1S. The spectral types are already in SIMBAD,
but in many cases the coordinates are rather poor, though eventually they will
be replaced by the completed GCVS revision (I presume). For now the main thing
are the links with IRAS objects, and in a few cases there have been
misidentifications by Kato, by Skiff, and by Kinnunen & Skiff. Some of these
are slight errors caused by crowding. Identifications were unambiguous when
comparing images from DSS2 and 2MASS via the Goddard SkyView utility.
Stephenson's newly-measured coordinates were also useful is finding the stars.
Most of the positions come from 2MASS (II/246), but a few were taken from
GSC-ACT or GSC-2.2 when the stars were near saturation in 2MASS (J or K << 5).
I have interpreted Stephenson's types given as, for example 'M9-10',
to mean that the type ranges over this interval; types given as for example,
'M7,8', I presume to mean that he has estimated types on two plates (these are
sometimes identical)---but the net result is the same in showing that the
star has a modest range in type depending on the phase of variability.
