A recent paper by Chen & Chen contains analysis of IRAS spectra to identify new carbon stars. In many cases they provide candidate visible-light identifications, apparently based on the USNO-A1.0 star catalogue. I have gone through the list to see if I could improve on these. Many of their choices for stars appear to be wrong, as is clearly evident from the 2MASS catalogue, or from the improved positions available from the MSX mid-infrared catalogue. (I should note that the erroneous visible-light IDs are not important for the purposes of the Chen & Chen paper, which concerns itself chiefly with analysis of the IRAS spectra.) The revised positions and identifications are collected below. In a few cases only the original IRAS position seems to be available, and for many more the best are from MSX, which are typically uncertain by +/- 5" or so. It is possible to be definitive (or nearly) when there is an unsaturated 2MASS detection with large J-K color (some spectacularly so in my experience), or USNO-B1.0 objects with r-i > 2 and "large" b-r color (when b is present at all). Not every IRAS source has a clear visible/near-IR counterpart, and all the uncertain cases are noted in the remarks. When the remark "wrong" is given, it means the Chen & Chen ID from A1.0 is almost certainly in error---usually they have chosen a faint star of ordinary color, sometimes also well outside the IRAS position error-ellipses. Where a comment starts "MacC: ", what follows is the spectral type determined by Jack MacConnell in a semi-published file available from the Strasbourg catalogue server (http://vizier.u-strasbg.fr/viz-bin/Cat?III/170). It seems likely that most of the "possible" and "suspect" carbon stars are either ordinary M-type or (unusual) post-AGB objects, the latter having IRAS fluxes unlike those of ordinary late-type stars. Rough magnitudes (usually in the red band) are taken mostly from GSC-2.2 or USNO-B1.0; these are not intended to be other than indicative of the general brightness. Like a lot of similar things, more conclusive results will await the appearance of the final 2MASS catalogues on VizieR. \Brian ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Improved coordinates and visible/near-IR identifications for some carbon-star candidates among IRAS sources version: 12 Apr 2003 source: 2003AJ....125.2215C CHEN P.-S. and CHEN W.-P.
