A recent paper by Glass & Schultheis provides accurate coordinates for
all the 174 M giants close to NGC 6522 (Baade's window region) found by
Blanco. These are present in SIMBAD but most of the stars are shown with no
coordinates. Some have spectroscopic and photometric follow-up in later
work, but I think this is the first time that positions are given for all
the stars from this list. Blanco's V magnitudes and spectral types are
already given in SIMBAD. The on-line journal article has the table in a
cluttered html format, so here are the coordinates and some IDs.
I matched the list against several astrometric catalogues, but because
of the extreme crowding it was not obvious to me that positions derived from
Schmidt plate-scans were obviously better than those by Glass & Schultheis.
Thus I retain here the original coordinates except where a star is present in
UCAC1. One typo and one star ID were corrected. I note that the printed and
on-line tables show Declination to 0".01 precision for the first 65 entries,
then reverts to arcsec precision after that. (RA is always shown to 1"
precision.) The new paper also shows lightcurves for many of the stars and
other analysis.
In comparing with SIMBAD, I recognized that the coordinates for variables
in this field given in the big paper by Gaposchkin (1955PZ.....10..337G) are
completely erroneous. One example will serve. Using his chart, the RR Lyrae
[G55] 45 = V1426 Sgr is located at:
17 56 58.56 -30 02 49 (1900)
18 03 23.27 -30 02 47 (2000) OGLE/MACHO variable lists
whereas for the same star Gaposchkin shows:
17 56 11 -29 57.4 (1900) Gaposchkin
18 02 35 -29 57.5 (2000)
No simple offset or precession error (for instance using the eq. 1875 of the
Cordoba or Cape catalogues) would yield a correction. Unfortunately all the
Gaposchkin stars are present in SIMBAD, mostly with the bogus coordinates.
