A list of spectral types for red stars in eastern Cepheus published by
Kazarian & Petrosian was posted to the Strasbourg VizieR service a few days
ago. The file was not very useful since there were no external IDs apart
from incomplete IRAS identifications, and the positions were not matched
against any current catalogue of precision. I have gone through the file to
obtain improved coordinates and identifications with other useful catalogues.
The table below shows coordinates mostly from either GSC-ACT or
USNO-A2.0 (a few stars from other sources), GSC names as available, plus
blue and red magnitudes from A2.0. The list was also matched in VizieR
against the IRAS, MSX, and Dearborn red-star catalogues, and the GCVS v4.1.
The source coordinates are typically within 3" of 'truth', but several
larger errors, star misidentifications, and typos appear. The authors
missed about a third of the IRAS match-ups. Some stars were not recovered
at their published positions, and two remain lost, probably due to
substantial errors in the coordinates.
The three columns of magnitudes show the original photo-blue magnitude,
followed by blue and red values from A2.0. I have changed the upper-limit
magnitudes given as >=19. to simply >19. The KP magnitudes seem to be okay,
and the "fainter than" stars really are below mag. 19 in other catalogues.
As the work proceeded, it was easy to spot the likely variable stars by their
discordant blue magnitudes among the KP, A2.0, and GSC-2.2 photometry. The
authors are correct in stating that, remarkably, none of these stars appears
in the GCVS at present.
