Subject: nova in M31

   11-7-93
Colleagues, 
   The probable nova in M31 discovered last week by Treffers et al.
is indeed a nova; strong Balmer emission lines, together with Fe II
(multiplet 42 and others) were visible in a spectrum obtained on
Nov. 8 UT with the Shane 3-m reflector at Lick Observatory (A. Filippenko
and T. Matheson).
