Filippenko, University of California at Berkeley; and M. W. Richmond, Princeton University, report the discovery of a probable nova in M31 at R.A. = 0h42m41.2s, Decl. = +41 17' 26" (equinox 2000.0), which is about 65" east and 78" north of the galaxy's nucleus and about 9" west of a field star. The object was found during the Leuschner Observatory Supernova Search in an image obtained on October 30 UT and confirmed on November 2 UT. On both dates it had a magnitude R = 16.2 +/- 0.3. It was not visible at this position to a limiting magnitude of about 17.5 in an exposure taken on Oct 26.
