Date: Wed, 11 Aug 93 14:40:28 PDT From: mauche@imager4.llnl.gov (Christopher Mauche) Subject: latest information on possible ORFEUS CV targets ORFEUS is scheduled to launch Aug 12 (tomorrow [yeah, I know, we've heard THAT before]). Here is an update from the AAVSO on our possible targets. It is my understanding that in addition to V3885 Sgr, we now have AM Her and Z Cam on the timeline. Will add SS Cyg or another dwarf nova if it goes into outburst... ----- Begin Included Message ----- >From aavso@cfa0.harvard.edu Wed Aug 11 10:30:45 1993 To: mauche@imager4.llnl.gov Subject: SS Cyg Content-Length: 2498 X-Lines: 66 To: mauche@image4.llnl.gov From: aavso@cfa0.harvard.edu Re: SS Cyg Date: August 11, 1993 Hi Chris, Our observers are keeping a very close eye on your observing targets for ORFEUS mission and also EUVE. We are getting large number of phone calls and e-mail messages every day from observers, worldwide. Below is an update on the ORFEUS CV targets: SS Cyg - It continues to be at quiescence. On Aug. 11.2 UT it was at magnitude 11.7. It is hard to tell when it will go into an outburst, however it "should" be soon. Checking our recent data, I find that the last outburst started on May 18, thus it has been 85 days! I assume that the present long interval of quiscence is due to the high activity during quiescence in June and July. Our observers are keeping a VERY close ete on this star and I will let you know as soon as we receive reports of its brightenning. RX And- it is going down from an outburst. On August 9 it was at magnitude 11.5, and Aug.11.2 UT at 12.4. VW Hyi - must be at quiescence since we have not heard any report of an outburst from our South African observers who are monitoring this star closely. Z Cam continues to be at standstill - on August 11.2 UT it was at magnitude 11.7. AM Her continues to be in its bright state - on August 11.2 UT it was at magnitude 13.0. RU Peg - It has gone into an outburst on August 3 and reached maximum on Aug. 9 at magnitude 11.4. On August 11.2 UT it was still at magnitude 11.4. In addition, the following CVs are in outburst: AH Her - On Aug. 11.1 UT at 11.1 magnitude AB Dra - On Aug. 11.1 UT at 12.4 magnitude US Ser - On Aug. 11.2 UT at 12.5 magnitude All the best wishes with the Discovery launch tomorrow. We will continue to keep you informed on the behavior of the CVs. Best regards, Janet Mattei ----- End Included Message ----- PS: Please note that SS Cyg is a target of opportunity for me for EUVE as well. The window for these observations extends from Aug 8 until about the 26th. If SS CYg goes outburst during this interval (before, during, or after the ORFEUS mission), I would like to get notification ASAP so that we can break into the EUVE timeline and get our approved observations. Your help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.
