[vsnet-history 1111] SN 1993N radio (Weiler)

Date: Mon, 7 Jun 93 09:59:28 EDT
From: Kurt w. Weiler <kweiler@shimmer.nrl.navy.mil>
Subject: Attempted radio detection of SN1993N

SUPERNOVA 1993N IN UGC 5695

     M. P. Rupen and R. A. Sramek, National Radio Astronomy
Observatory; K. W. Weiler and S. D. Van Dyk, Naval Research
Laboratory; and N. Panagia, Space Telescope Science Institute, report
an attempt to detect radio emission from SN1993N made on UT
16.8844 May 1993 at 6 cm wavelength (4.86 GHz) with the Very Large
Array in 'B' configuration. No emission was detected to a limit of
<0.2 mJy (3 sigma) within a 30 x 30 arcsec box centered on the SN
position (IAUC 5784). SN1993N is thought to be a Type II peculiar
similar to SN1986J and SN1988Z, both of which are known to be
bright radio supernovae. However, the lack of radio detection from
SN1993N at this time is not definitive since both SN1986J and
SN1988Z remained optically thick to centimeter radio emission for
several months to several years after their initial explosion. Radio
monitoring of SN1993N will be continued.
