[vsnet-history 874] SN 1993J (Filippenko)

Subject: SN 1993J update

   5-4-93
Dear SN 1993J worshipers:

The rate at which the supernova is fading at optical wavelengths
seems to be slowing down, especially in R and I. Indeed, it might
be settling onto a "real" plateau. On the other hand, it is still
possible that the object had a relatively thin hydrogen envelope,
and that its brightness will begin to decline rapidly in the near
future; if so, it may turn into a "Type Ib/Ic" supernova spectro-
scopically, as did SN 1987K --- see Filippenko, 1988, AJ). Please
continue observing with diligence! Optical AND IR photometry are
important if we are to construct a bolometric light curve.

It is especially important to continue low-dispersion optical
spectroscopy throughout the current bright run. Not many telescopes
are equipped with low-dispersion spectrographs at this time, so those
that are can really make a difference. There are interesting features
developing --- such as a double-peaked H-alpha profile!

Ralph A.M.J. Wijers, Princeton University Observatory, has a list of
SN 1993J magnitudes that can be usd by plotting packages that like columns.
Please contact him directly if you would like to receive it. His
e-mail address is rw@astro.Princeton.EDU . Alternatively, the
list is also available via anonymous ftp to astro.princeton.edu .
Login as ftp, password anonymous, and go to subdirectory rw/sn.
You will find two files:
1993j.mag : the magnitude list
1993j.conflict : a list of differences between this list and others,
which should be resolved, as well as some general
remarks about problems with the list.
Ralpha notes that "The most important thing for the near future will
be to get the details of the various sets of comparison stars, and
to try and get all visual observations reduced to the same set
of reference stars. It would be helpful if visual observers
send me the reference stars they used for each of their estimates,
and the magnitudes that these stars have according to their chart."

Below are some notes from others.

   Cheers,

   Alex Filippenko

   From Wim van Driel (lvandri@c1.mtk.nao.ac.jp):

Concerns: pre-discovery image/ request for R-band magnitudes of faint stars

We are working on the pre-discovery R-band image we made with the Kiso
Schmidt on March 25.6, from which we estimated an upper limit of about
18 for the supernova. However, after spatially filtering the image to
remove the diffuse emission of the galaxy we have the impression that the
upper limit is considerably lower than 18 in R. The problem in determining
an accurate upper limit is that we do not have reliable magnitudes for faint
stars in M81.
So if someone could provide us with R magnitudes (plus positions) of stars
of about 16th to 20th magnitude in M81, preferably within about 6 arcmin
radius of the supernova, we would be very grateful.

SUPERNOVA 1993J IN NGC 3031- SEQUENCE
D. Hanzl, N. Copernicus Planetarium, Brno, communicates that
GSC 4383.0384 appears to be variable, first noted visually on Apr.
16 by K. Hornoch at Lelekovice and J. Kysely at Vlasim, and
confirmed photoelectrically by Hanzl as having a maximum at
V = 10.98 +/- 0.05, amplitude about 0.35 mag, and period of
probably < 1 day.

Editor:

Star D

The above suspected variable is star D on the sequence of 'The
Astronomer' (assigned magnitude 10.70) and is therefore dropped.
If anyone who has submitted estimates involving 'D' also made
additional estimates involving other comparisons please e-mail
these as soon as possible. This would not only enable us to
re-reduce the estimate but also may enable the value of 'D' to
be determined for that date and time.

Star 1

In addition to assist with reduction of early estimates we have
added GSC 4383.150 to our sequence as star 1 with a magnitude
value of 10.3. This was used extensively by many groups when the
supernova was near maximum. There are two stars of '103' on the
Thompson-Bryan chart. The eastern star is 'C' on the TA sequence
and the newly-introduced star '1' is on the western edge.
On the 'B' format electronic chart issued with E-Circular 722,
the coordinates are X=38, Y=57.

Latest sequence with other identifications. Please only use the
assigned TA values in your reductions.
