Subject: Possible supernova in NGC 3031 (M81)
Date:29 March 1993
FOR NOVA BROADCAST NETWORK
We have been informed of a discovery of a possible supernova
in NGC 3031 (M81) by Francisco Garcia Diaz, Lugo Spain,
member of Supernova Search Group "M 1" of Madrid Astronomical
Association (MAA) and the AAVSO. The object discovered visually on
Mar 28.86 UT, using 25 cm f/3.9 telescope, was at visual magnitude
12.0. The discovery was confirmed at magnitude 11.8 on Mar. 29.1 UT,
by Diego Rodriguez, Madrid, Spain, using an ST-4 unfiltered CCD with
20 cm. f/5 telescope, and a position for the object was obtained
200" south and 210" west of the nucleus. It is about 25"
to the northeast of a 14.0 magnitude star shown on finder charts
of this galaxy by the AAVSO and those by G. D. Thompson and J. T. Bryan.
No object was seen at the reported position on March 26 down to 14.0 magnitude
during a regular check of this galaxy by Francisco Pujol and Jose Ripero,
Madrid, Spain. On March 29.875 UT, Pujol and Rodriguez reported the object
to be at 11.3 visual and 11.0 unfiltered CCD magnitudes, respectively.
All observers are members of MAA and AAVSO.
No spectroscopic or other confirmation has been obtained of this object,
at this time.
