[vsnet-history 506] U Gem light variation (Kato)

(1993 Mar. 23)

subject: U Gem light variation

Concerning the modulation in brightness in U Gem:

Closer look at the data reveals that U Gem and the comparison
may be in the non-linear region of the detector. U Gem is too bright
for this apparatus for suitable comparisons. Therefore part of modulation
reported in the previous report may be due to the non-linear response of
the detector. This effect for stars of moderate magtitudes have been
removed internally using comparisons with different magnitudes.
Proper correction of the non-linearity (eg. incomplete charge transfer
and saturation in A-D conversion) for the brightest end requires additional
experiment and much time and it will not be in time for the end of
the present outburst. However, it is still worth detecting any modulation
during this bright (presumably long) outburst.

Regards,
Taichi Kato
